Synopsis: Moody teenager spends two hundred chapters walking around with his hands in his pockets, is rude to everyone he meets, and the world bows before him. Girls throw themselves at his feet before they can even have a full conversation. The universe lets him drink from the firehose of good fortune and his response to it all is to continue being moody and rude.
Within the first chapter the universe grants him powers that are not just “overpowered” but stupidly, perversely overpowered. I know that being OP is usually core to these types of stories, but this is absurd. I’m not joking when I say this kid never takes his hands out of his pockets. No enemy or situation is a challenge to him. His character doesn’t experience any personal growth except for his stat numbers going up. And his stats don’t matter anyway because the kid never runs out of mana or hits any kind of wall. His real power levels simply don’t exist. He’s a slow, boring bulldozer.
Every once in a while they’ll introduce a villain who immediately loses every braincell upon meeting the MC. He’ll shout some verbal diarrhea about being more powerful than anyone (despite being a low-level newbie himself) and then ramble about coveting “his woman” without provocation or purpose. MC then obliterates them within seconds. Every villain is a carbon copy of the last guy, all the way down to the personality and dialogue, only with a different haircut. Slowly driving over speed bumps in a parking lot for hours is more engaging than watching MC give these one-dimensional nobodies a beatdown.
There is almost no world building here. The author establishes nothing about the universe and its history before lazily wading into the story. They assume that you’ve already read every other “Solo Leveling” story that they ripped off, so they don’t bother explaining it. The author doesn’t add anything of value on top of it either. There’s no nuance or plot twists that make this story unique from the others. In fact, there are no plot twists at all.
The only thing that surprises me is how well drawn this webcomic is. Perhaps the real drama you’re supposed to get from this story is asking the question “Why did so many people put so much effort into something so boring?”
