Not so much being selfish. Her title, her position – all of it, was because he was in love with her from the start (or so she is thinking) which makes her feel pretty bad. She worked really hard for the position and tolerated a lot of demonization over being a woman who is a knight.
We need to cut Paul some slack. She’s going on 30 minutes of sleep brain, recently gave birth, was paranoid with built up stress for 9 months, and did not grow up with a healthy family live. She very much was an abused child with a lost childhood and has good reason for having trouble trusting others. She is also living in a time where women are very much look down on. ***She only saw the emperor as her first true friend and as leader who value her. She also work hard and earned all her achievements.
Its understandable that she would have trouble understanding someone romantically loving her. She wanted a marriage of confidence before because it would be on her terms. She would final have control of her family, feel secure, and be like other honorable knights.
