One sentence synopsis: “What if Dexter learned kung fu?”
Administrator Lee Kang-Jin is a murim-era magical cultivation martial arts story, but the twist is that the main character is a neurodivergent kid with the heart of a cold-blooded serial killer. He doesn’t understand people. He doesn’t understand emotions. He’s awkward in ways that a neurodivergent would relate to and he’s incredibly intelligent, but at his core he is still a total psychopath.
The main supporting character is a wandering swindler with a strong ability to talk his way out of a difficult situation. He uses this talents to convince the kid’s father to let him teach martial arts despite the fact that he doesn’t know anything about it except some weird rumors that he picked up in the military. So while completely lying his way through the training he ends up becoming this difficult child’s personal psychotherapist. And somehow he’s really REALLY good at it.
Over time the teacher becomes the only person in the world who truly understands this child and becomes the only person capable of steering him away from becoming a mass-murderer. The child grows up to be a (mostly) well-adjusted adult, but he still doesn’t understand emotions deep down. He has to use his teacher’s reasoning and logic to navigate every personal choice and social interaction. Sometimes he gets it right, sometimes he gets it wrong. And when things go wrong, they REALLY go wrong.
The story and characterization are surprisingly human and realistic. It’s an excellent story. The characters are all very well fleshed out, even the side characters. It’s especially interesting to follow the main character as he stops and thinks his way through different scenarios. He’s not an idiot by any means. In fact, his intuition makes him an incredibly talented martial artist with very little training at all. He just doesn’t have any emotional connection to other people and you get to see him use cold logic to eventually come to the right conclusions. This makes for some nail-biting scenes as well as some hilarious situations as the people around him are left scratching their heads as to why he does anything. And yet, despite his awkwardness he does develop a strong sense of justice and eventually becomes a great man in ways that others simply wouldn’t be capable of, either due to personal reasons or cultural reasons reflective of that time period. I should also add that while he does make a lot of awkward mistakes, the author’s storytelling keeps it from becoming an uncomfortable cringe-fest. You’re going to want to invest in this character’s journey.
Excellent story, would highly recommend. If you’re looking for a shallow, ego-stroking power fantasy story go read Martial Peak or something. For everyone else, this is an easy story to recommend. It’s incredibly captivating if you give it a chance.
