While steam-powered airplanes are possible if I remember correctly it’s really not worth the effort, so not sure why building a steam engine would help with her desires. Well unless it’s practice to learn enough modern engineering to produce the first gasoline-powered engine in their world (well more likely diesel or alcohol and run it on bio-diesel).
