In the Chinese culture your parents and your teacher( master and disciple relationship) are the most important things. And it would be around 600,000 or 700,000 dollars since it’s in China, where 1 dollar is 7 yuan. I’ve read the original version and they use expression that translated doesn’t means the same. And the rest of the family did have money it just they didn’t want to give it that’s why they blame the father of the MC.
