I think it represents her old issues actually coming up to the surface and her being forced to deal with them. In her previous life, she mostly just repressed them–or the people she had issues with ended up being dead (by homicide or suicide). So, she could just…not think about it at all back then. Obviously, that wouldn’t fly in this life.
It’s not a smooth growing up process, nor is it easy, but it’s something she needed to do. It does make the story feel a tad slower than most.

I do wish she can defeat him honestly and have Ray congratulate her freely. It might help defeat some of her demons. One of her sources of resentment is how the king never seemed to allow her to do anything that would allow her to win over Ray–she wasn’t even allowed to go to the nobles’ academy, FFS. So yeah, her given just the opportunity to compete with him honestly is more than what she got in her last life.
